Dragon Needs to Clean Up Its Mess

Dragon's Waste Threatens Our Health And Environment Tell Maine DEP Commissioner Dawn Gallagher to take action. Direct line: (207) 287-3034

* Dragon Products Company's 845,000 ton cement kiln dust waste-pile in Thomaston covers 15 acres and is leaching plumes of toxics-tainted liquids into area aquifers. Dragon Products does not have a permit for this waste pile.

* The EPA has found that cement kiln dust contains dioxin, chromium and lead, along with other toxic chemicals. Tests done by the Department of Environmental Protection (DEP) show that chromium and other compounds are contaminating the area. Dust from Dragon blows into neighbors' homes and yards and into local forests.

* Blasting from Dragon's quarry is causing cracks in nearby structures and could damage underground gas tanks less than 3/10 of a mile away.

* The facility releases mercury, lead and dioxin into our air.

We Deserve A Safe And Healthy Community.

* The waste pile behind Dragon should be managed as the federal government proposes: Dragon's waste should be placed in a lined landfill and covered to prevent groundwater contamination.

* The state should take immediate corrective action to prevent fugitive dust emissions.

* Blasting should be strictly prohibited near sensitive areas, including gas tanks that may rupture and leak.

* Dragon should clean up its act before it expands its operation. Tell Commissioner Dawn Gallagher at the Maine DEP to take action to clean up Dragon: (207) 287-3034
