Forward Header Subject: mpa efforts Author: amy@mcbi.org Date: 01/24/2001 3:34 PM Jerry, It was good to talk with you the other day. I shared our conversation with my colleagues at American Oceans Campaign, Phil Kline and Ted Morton and we talked through some thoughts/ideas on what might be a productive and worthwhile effort. One of the main ideas we agreed upon is to have a discussion that gets beyond the concept level of MPAs (e.g. they are good for xyz, should be considered an important tool in the toolbox etc.). My impression is that there has been a lot of that already, but things don't seem to get beyond that. We thought a useful approach might be to have at least 2 workshops spaced a few months apart (but within a definite time frame to maintain momentum) with balanced representation of all stakeholders. This includes scientists, environmentalists, various fishing interests, tourism and recreation businesses, the general public, etc. The first workshop would focus on identifying common values, that is, what resource values do we think are important to protect e.g. spawning areas, essential fish habitat/habitat areas of particular concern, critical habitat for endangered species, maintaining the full spectrum of GoM biodiversity etc. Through this discussion, I think common goals will be revealed. The second workshop would focus on putting lines on the map, based on what everyone agrees is valuable to protect. I recognize this is a bit of a jump, and the format and details of hbw to make this work would need to be worked ---------------------------- page 2 gist of what we were thinking: through carefully, but this is the Key elements are a map reached with some months?) (4) make this different from previous failed once concrete proposals were raised. I don't know how but we can talk to those involved in previous discussion insights into what went wrong. (1) clearly defined, concrete product (i.e. lines on sort of agreement) (2) short time frame (e.g. 6 and representative format (groups of more than results, but we need to have in the Dry.Tortugas and on how choose group MPA discussions to ensure groups to that this, get So these are a few first thoughts to to proceed. I look forward your thoughts and reactions. to talking with you again open up the discussion on how and hearing Best wishes, Amy ************************************************************** Amy Mathews-Amos, Vice-President Marine Conservation Biology Institute 1901 N.
