The island, which is owned by the State of Maine, is the largest undeveloped island on the east coast.
PLANS TO DEVELOP THE ISLAND HAVE BEEN A HOT DEBATE TOPIC FOR MANY YEARS. WEDNESDAY, STATE LAWMAKERS WERE ASKED TO VOTE ON WHETHER TO ALLOW MAINE COAST HERITAGE TRUST, THE SIERRA CLUB AND THE DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION TO DIVIDE UP USE OF THE 941 ACRE ISLAND. 600 ACRES WOULD BE PLACED UNDER A CONSERVATION EASEMENT WITH PLANS TO BUILD AN ECO-PARK THAT WOULD CHARGE ADMISSION TO THE PUBLIC. ANOTHER 340 ACRES WOULD BE USED FOR TRANSPORTATION USE THAT COULD INCLUDE SHIPS, TRUCKS AND TRAINS... "the whole thing stinks it really stinks. It's another example of abuse in power pushing it through because we can do it." "the idea is to come to a resolution that enjoys a balance between conservation and transportation and I think the plan as conceived now does that."> TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE MEMBERS REFUSED TO TAKE A VOTE WEDNESDAY ON THE ISSUE, SAYING THEY DON'T HAVE A COMPLETE PLAN IN HAND. TRANSPORTATION COMMISSIONER DAVID COLE SAYS THE REPORT IS NEARLY FINISHED AND HE HOPES TO GET IT TO LAWMAKERS BY THE END OF THE MONTH.
