Update on Corea Navy Property and LNG

Background:
As part of the Navy divestiture in Hancock County, a parcel of land about 500 acres in Corea (Gouldsboro) was to be given to the Town. Part of the original agreement was that the undeveloped part of the land was to go to USFW, and the roughly 40ish acres that were developed the town would take possession of, and develop a reuse that was compatible with they USFW use of the remaining property (that's a requirement in the deed.) The USFW is waterfront, and will allow two 20 ft. ROW to the developed portion.

After much discussion, the town soundly rejected accepting the property at a town meeting in 2003.

The Navy has since come to the state. Unfortunately the state needs specific legislation to take and get rid of property - which can't be emergency, so we could not take the property til next Sept (05). This does not work with the Navy's desired time line.

There is an aquaculture company in the Franklin incubator that is very interested in the facility (Maine Halibut.) The use would be land based aquaculture, with the need for sea water to be pumped to the tanks. I approached Jake Ward, and the University has offered to consider taking over this site as a spin off site for their aquaculture incubator. Jake is working to get the information needed to take this to the Trustees for approval or rejection by this September (04).

The town has now resurfaced because a developer has approached the town about siting an LNG terminal there, with the promise of cash. They do not want to have another town meeting for at least another six months, which does not fit into the Navy's desired time line.

FYI: Knowing the interest in LNG - the site (less than 50 acres, with two 20 foot ROW to the water) is not likely big enough for an LNG facility.

And LNG is not compatible with the deed covenant that reuse of the site be compatible with the USFW. However, the town is being courted, so you may hear about this.

Lance Boucher is also handling this, and is the one who has been in contact with the town manager, but Lance is off getting married or something for a couple of weeks.
