Fishing Grounds of the Gulf of Maine
Davis Bank; Crab Bank (Nantucket Shoals).-This is an irregular piece of bottom lying in a generally ENE. and WSW direction at about 20 miles dis- tance ESE from Sankaty Head. It is perhaps 14 miles long by 5 miles wide at its broadest. Depths upon it are from 4 to 9 fathoms, with soundings of 12 to 18 about it. over a bottom of sand and broken shells.
The fishing is done around the edges where the bottom is gravel and shells covered with sponges and kelp. Cod are taken by handlining in May June, July, and August.
