Fishermen give chilly reception to Statoil offshore wind plan at 2012 Maine Fishermen's Forum

Statoil plans could jeopardize Maine, NH and Mass lobster fisheries. Norwegian firm's windpark could be 10 miles offshore; DeepCwind's by comparison could be 70 miles offshore. DeepCwind & Statoil's Gulf of Maine wind power to skip Maine, go by undersea cable directly to Boston?. According to Heather Dietz, a senior marine programs director at the Island Institute , a developer has expressed interest in such a cable. Noting the Google-backed Atlantic Wind Connection plan to install an offshore wind backbone cable off New York and New Jersey, Dietz said:

"There are developers interested in building a similar offshore connection line from somewhere along the Maine coast to somewhere off Boston. In order to pick up and carry power from offshore wind turbine facilities south."

Matt Nixon of the Maine Coastal Program State said that a 25 megawatt commercial pilot project, presumably Statoil unless there have been other bidders, that will soon be subsidized under a 2010 State of Maine Request for Proposals for Long-term Contracts for Deep-Water Offshore Wind Energy Pilot Projects ,. Under the RFP the company would be required to connect in Maine.
